image that says the squid fact: ChatGPT Almost Used A Squid's Voice Instead of ScarJo’s

Ok, did OpenAI CEO Sam Altman actually consider using a squid’s voice for the latest iteration of ChatGPT?

No.

Do any squids really have a “voice”?

Technically, no. Or, not really. But there have been some reports of divers hearing clicking sounds when in the presence of squid. And there have been instances of researchers hearing unexplained clicking noises while studying squid in captivity (even if those noises were never definitively traced back to the beak).

And they’re not crazy for thinking that. One reason these divers and researchers suspect the noises are coming from the beak is because octopuses can click their beaks. And, like I always say, “like octopus, like squid,” right?

Anyway, I think the real lesson learned here is that the OpenAI team needs to start being a little more inclusive. Maybe instead of using Scarlett Johansson’s voice, they could’ve used a squid’s theoretical beak-clicking voice, so as not to exclude cephalopods from experiencing the magic that is AI.

Almost there…
