This one feels like we’ve been lied to. I hear of a squid called a reef squid and I expect to be able to go down to my local reef and find one.
Turns out, no. Er, well, not always.
I Just Thought This Title Was Catchy
Technically, reef squids are most commonly found in coral reef ecosystems. They live there because they like to hide among the crevices and structures of the reef. But, they don’t always live there. Reef squids can also live in seagrass beds and sandy bottoms.
Seagrass beds are good because they also have hiding places and protection from predators. Sandy bottoms are abundant with prey like small fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.
Don’t Judge a Book
So, what’d we learn today? Don’t judge a book by its cover. Reef squids can live wherever they want to live and be whatever they want to be.
